Just Sew Helen's Blog

Hello & welcome to my blog where I will share an insight into my life, values and behind the scenes of Just Sew Helen.

This blog will show you the topics that inspire my small business including my love of sewing & dressmaking, hand embroidery and my exclusive baby loss & remembrance gifts. Underlying the creation of Just Sew Helen are women's health & pregnancy loss issues.

You can also find me over on Minerva & I have recently joined the Simple Sew Blogger Team.

I look forward to sharing my posts - feel free to make any comments.

  1. The pattern choice , design and fabrics

    Fabric, design, pattern JustSewHelen.com #SimplicityTurns90 #SummerSewingChallenge #SimplicityByMe

Having finally made the decision to enter the #SummerSewingChallenge by SimplicityNewlook & with 16 days until the closing date, only 4 of which I could spend sewing, I narrowed down my choice to the Best Dressmakers category.  I thought that my husband, although supportive, would be working and not free for fittings if I chose the men's/boys shirt category.  Similarly, our boy/girl grand twins are ideal models for the children’s wear but I didn’t think we’d be seeing them over the next 10 days. I don’t fulfil the beginner requirements which left the ladies dress - & I don’t wear dresses!!

  2. Entering the challenge #SimplicityTurns90 JustSewHelen.com

Before we went on our summer family holiday I came across the Summer Challenge that SimplicityNewlook is hosting to mark 90 years of Simplicity Sewing Patterns. I briefly read the details and decided that I wouldn't have enough time to make something due to being away for a couple of weeks.

The prize, however, really interested me & kept popping into my thoughts. It would be nice to win sewing patterns and other bits & bobs but the part that grabbed my attention the most was the winner being invited to become a VIP Simplicity Blogger - I could really see myself fulfilling this role given the opportunity.  I have done dressmaking since a young girl and although my niche is now bereavement gifts incorporating embroidery & applique, I do still make clothes for myself.  This website in its current format will also enable me to pursue the role.

  3. The Inspiration behind JustSewHelen.com

Welcome to my first blog on Just Sew Helen!

If you’ve found my About page you’ll already know a little bit about my background but, in a nutshell, I’m a midwife by day and I love to sew. I’m married with 2 boys, 2 step children (now adults) and 5 step grandchildren. And, like many people, I’ve also had a run of bad times that have really been the inspiration for developing my business.

I wanted to incorporate my life time love of sewing and it was also a passion of my mum, who sadly died in 2015 from Ovarian Cancer.
