About Just Sew Helen
Welcome & thank you for visiting Just Sew Helen.
I'm Helen Baker, founder, designer, production & manufacturing manager, book keeper & customer service manager of Just Sew Helen!
What I do.
I design & create applique and hand embroidery keepsakes to commemorate a special event, mark a milestone in someones life or to remember a loved one. I recreate cherished fabric into a practical keepsake or bereavement gift, such as a memory cushion or bear.
A bit about me.
I'm a happily married mother of 2, step mom of 2 & step nanny of 4.
I've worked as a midwife for many years, caring for high risk pregnancies, but in my spare time I'm developing and expanding Just Sew Helen, an online resource and e-shop for hand sewn, framed applique & embroidered gifts plus bespoke keepsakes created from loved ones cherished fabric items.
I have always sewn and was taught by my mother as a little girl, working alongside her making clothes for my teddies whilst mom worked from home taking in dressmaking orders. Over the years I have made items for my home and clothes for myself, and more recently returned to applique & hand embroidery.
Why did I start the business?
As a result of personal illness in 2012 when I underwent surgery and radiation treatment for thyroid cancer I am focusing on doing what I enjoy to develop a business that will hopefully benefit others, as well as fulfill my stitching side.
On 4th May 2015 I lost my mother to ovarian cancer after a relatively short illness. Sadly, some close friends also lost their parents & I wanted to develop personal keepsake items that will allow loved ones clothes to be recreated into a useful item or a framed sentiment. I make no secret that I wouldn't wear my own mother's clothes but wish to keep some items in another way, for example cushions, memory bears or appliqued items.
As a midwife, I have been in the privileged position as life begins following the birth of a baby and there is a wealth of gifts & keepsakes available to celebrate this wonderful occasion. However, from personal experience, I have found it difficult to find just the right gift following the death of some one close, hence I started designing and making my own. In particular, for famillies suffering the loss of a baby, it is vital that they find their way to remember their baby and I'm developing baby loss items to help famillies find some comfort.
The importance of Baby Loss Awareness & my personal story can be read here.
In any spare time I have, I love sewing for myself, spending time with my family & friends including weekends at our mobile home in Wales where we go walking, cycling and spending lazy days in the countryside.
In support of Ovarian Cancer, the silent cancer that doesn't present it self often until the advanced stages, I am donating £1.00 from every sale to Target Ovarian Cancer - a leading charity in research and support.
