About Just Sew Helen - textile artist
Welcome & thank you for visiting Just Sew Helen.
I'm Helen Baker, founder, designer, production & manufacturing manager, book keeper & customer service manager of Just Sew Helen!
What I do.
I design & create textile hand embroidered keepsakes to commemorate a special event, mark a milestone in someones life or to remember a loved one. I recreate cherished fabric into a practical keepsake or remembrance gift, such as a memory cushion or bear.
Over time, my work has evolved to include miscarriage and baby loss pictures and I now specialise in these exclusive gifts.
A bit about me.
I'm a happily married mother of 2 boys, step mom of 2 & step nanny of 5.
I've worked as a midwife for many years caring for high risk pregnancies and in my spare time I'm developing and expanding Just Sew Helen, an online resource and e-shop for hand sewn & embroidered keepsakes, including bespoke items created from loved ones cherished fabric items. I enjoy commissions and designing to a customer's personal requirements.
Why did I start the business?
As a result of personal illness in 2012 when I underwent surgery and radiation treatment for thyroid cancer I am focusing on doing what I enjoy to develop a business that will hopefully benefit others, and utilise my sewing skills.
Mom taught me to sew when I was a little girl & I worked alongside her making clothes for my teddies whilst she worked from home taking in dressmaking orders. Over the years I have made items for my home and clothes for myself, and more recently returned to applique & hand embroidery.
Sadly, Mom died in 2015 from Ovarian Cancer following a relatively short illness and this inspired me to use my sewing skills to raise money and awareness of ovarian cancer.
As a midwife, I have been in the privileged position as life begins following the birth of a baby and there are many beautiful gifts available to celebrate this wonderful occasion. However, from personal experience, I have found it difficult to find just the right gift following the death of some one close, hence I started designing and making my own. In particular, for famillies suffering the loss of a baby, it is vital that they find their way to remember their baby and I'm developing baby loss items to help famillies find some comfort.
The importance of Baby Loss Awareness & my personal story of miscarriage can be read here.
In any spare time I have, I love sewing for myself making clothes, guest posting on a sewing website and adding posts to my own blog. I love spending time with my family & friends including weekends at our mobile home in Wales where we go walking and spending lazy days in the countryside.
In support of Ovarian Cancer, the silent cancer that often doesn't present it self until the advanced stages, I am donating £1.00 from every sale to Target Ovarian Cancer - a leading charity in research and support.
